Diesel Power in the Coal Mining Region
Grand finale featuring a dedicated coal train and classic DR diesel traction in the Profen area.
Sunday, 20.10.2024
Under the title "Diesel Power in the Coal Region," we experienced a unique photo charter on Sunday, October 20, 2024, featuring two large DR-class diesel locomotives operating together on the line surrounding the Profen open-cast mine. This event placed the spotlight - likely for the last time - on coal transport in the Zeitz area. The Arnstadt-based "Wumme" (Class 120 274) and LEG’s largely original "Ludmilla" (Class 132 158) hauled the coal train jointly between Leipzig and Bad Köstritz, with additional individual runs planned for the locomotives.
As always, photo opportunities were maximized through shuttle runs and scheduled photo stops, allowing for a wide variety of shots. The locomotives also swapped positions regularly, ensuring each could be captured against an authentic backdrop. Another highlight was the presence of vintage vehicles - such as an IFA W50 truck and a Wartburg car - which further enhanced the nostalgic atmosphere.
This event offered not only a nostalgic look back at the glory days of coal transport but also marked the end of an era. Modernization work on the line is set to begin in 2025, and the coal wagons from Profen will soon disappear. We were able to immerse ourselves in the world of traditional coal transport one last time - an unforgettable experience that brought the region's history to life.
