Limestone traffic around Blankenburg
Steam- and diesel-hauled lime hopper wagons
Saturday, 27.01.2024
Class 95 locomotives were based in the Harz region as early as the 1950s—during the era of the Deutsche Reichsbahn—and operated on both the steep line between Blankenburg and Rübeland and the section towards Halberstadt. Locomotive 95 1027-2 was also once part of the fleet stationed in Blankenburg. A special photo freight train was organized to commemorate this era of the "Mountain Queen" in the Harz, and the weather cooperated magnificently. The train consisted of typical lime-transporting hopper wagons and offered multiple opportunities for photography thanks to numerous scheduled photo stops. In the evening, there was another chance to capture atmospheric night shots at the Blankenburg locomotive depot.

On the second day, we switched from steam to diesel traction. The spotlight was on LEG locomotive 132 158-7. The engine stands out not only for its original livery but also for classic details such as the old-style cooling fans and round buffers. With its historical markings, it was ideally suited for authentic operation hauling our photo train.
