Reminiscence of the final days of operation of the Wolkenstein–Jöhstadt narrow-gauge railway

Wednesday, 30.04.2025

The gradual closure of the Wolkenstein–Jöhstadt narrow-gauge railway began in the spring of 1982 with the suspension of freight traffic between Niederschmiedeberg and Jöhstadt. The line was finally closed completely on January 31, 1986.

To commemorate the final days of operation over 40 years ago, a photo train event was held on April 30, 2025. A mixed freight and passenger train (GmP) - authentic to the era - was assembled using locomotive IVk 99-1568-7 (99-568), a transporter wagon carrying a loaded boxcar, and passenger and baggage coaches; various operational scenarios were then reenacted at Steinbach. The train traveled from Steinbach to Jöhstadt, making numerous stops for photography along the way.

A relatively cold night allowed for morning shots featuring spectacular steam effects at the well-known photo spot south of Schmalzgrube. Afterward, the train proceeded to Steinbach for extensive shunting maneuvers, accompanied by the train crew reenacting operational procedures.

The journey then continued to Jöhstadt in several stages. This gave participating photographers ample opportunity to capture images at locations that are otherwise difficult to reach or accessible only on foot.

The event was superbly organized - and the weather was equally excellent - leaving all participants highly satisfied. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the organizer and the association for making it happen.
